In 2016, J, a paramedic faced allegations of theft from his employer and was referred to the HCPC. After being acquitted on criminal charges, the regulator pursued several allegations, including dishonesty. In a substantive hearing of the case which eventually spanned almost three years, Khaled was instructed to replace J’s original representative and review the overall direction of the defence to bring the matter to a close at the resuming hearing.

After introducing fresh CCTV evidence and a previously uncalled witness, enabling J to confidently give evidence and detailed submissions on the insufficiency of the evidence, Khaled secured a finding of not proven on all charges. The case was concluded with no further action and J can continue to practise as a paramedic.
